Ensure that there is a clear connection between your work and the theme “A Spectrum of …” Ask yourself, “Will the judges understand the connection with the theme without reading my artist statement?” Does the photograph either directly capture or evoke a representation of the theme?

2. Creativity and originality

Ensure that your photograph is unique, original, and has a strong concept. Consider, “Will my piece surprise viewers? Will it make them see something in a new way?

3. Quality of artistic composition – technical

Ensure that your photograph conveys your expertise and skills in photography and incorporates techniques that take into account the framing, lighting, subject(s), and overall composition.

4. Quality of artistic composition – concepts

Ensure that your work is thoughtful and perhaps captures or symbolizes certain feelings or emotions. Ask yourself. “What emotion(s) will my photograph evoke within viewers?”

5. Overall compositional score

Ensure that it is some of your best work and will stand out to others. Ask yourself, “Have I captured something like this before? Has someone else captured something similar? If so, what did I do differently?” That unique element can be the difference between an image that feels too familiar and one that that is captivating.. Consider how different perspectives (both literally and figuratively) might add that important final element.
